Captain

by AG last modified 21-07-2006 20:24

The Captain is a renowned hero of many wars. His strength, weapon and armor make him dangerous when facing Medium or Heavy opponents, but he needs heavier equipment to deal with heavily armored foes. He is not really strong enough to face Tremendous foes.

Strategy

The Captain is friendly with the Guard, Patrol and Soldiers. He can be guaranteed to find the Guard and Soldiers at the beginning of the game (he can start the game at the House or the Guardhouse), and the Guard have those M weapons. An axe costs only 4 gold, which the Captain can buy at price x2 even without selling any of his belongings. If he sells his short sword, he can buy it at price x3 (and have 2 gold left over). This will allow him to combat H armoured or T unarmoured foes. The only disadvantage is its short length, which isn't a problem except against Goblins, Giants, Demons, Dragons, Natives or other characters as most of the monsters have weapon length 0. However, his H attacks are slow, so he needs someone to Lure in order to be able to combat these heavier monsters effectively. Bows and crossbows are only available from the Woodfolk (Unfriendly) or the Order (Neutral), so some violence will almost certainly need to be done to acquire something with which he can use Aim. You could try killing the Elf. Or pick up the Raid campaign, which will turn the Woodfolk Friendly.

The Captain shouldn't go after the heaviest monsters though - his Medium vulnerability means that those monsters who can do H or T damage will take him out quick smart, despite starting with armour. If he wants the high Fame bounties, he will need to Hire natives.

The Captain will want to Hire a native group as early as possible, but will require some more Gold to do so. In short, he will need to Loot a treasure site or two without help before he will have an opportunity to Hire any natives, although he may get lucky with the Patrol. None of the native groups are his Allies, so the chances of receiving a Boon are very small.
