Heavy Monsters

by AG last modified 20-08-2007 09:00

I think it is pretty safe to say that most of the fighting that takes place in the Realm takes place against Heavy monsters. They are the workhorse of the quest for fame. There are some very dangerous beasts counted amongst their members though (Bats!) and none of them should be underestimated.

Flying Dragon

Vulnerability: Heavy and Armoured

Appears: Smoke M, Flutter (M or C)

Monster Roll: 1

Weapon Length: 0 (Tooth/Claw)

Fame: 5

Notoriety: 5

Comments: Not nearly as dangerous as their bigger cousins, but these dragons always come in pairs. On their alerted side they are fast, but inflict minimal damage, so it is usually best to target the H-side dragon if one of them has flipped. They still require H damage before sharpness at time 3 to undercut though; otherwise you will have to be lucky enough to line up. Or have help. The Guard should be able to do it. Or a knight of the Order. Or the Black Knight with his mace.

Dragon

Vulnerability: Heavy and Armoured

Appears: Smoke C, Roar C, Slither (M or C)

Monster Roll: 1

Weapon Length: 0 (Tooth/Claw)

Fame: 5

Notoriety: 5

Comments: The weakest of all the dragons, but they can often be found with their bigger cousins. They are much faster than the Tremendous non-flying dragon, and that makes them more dangerous than you might expect.

Troll

Vulnerability: Heavy and Armoured

Appears: Bones C, Stink C, Roar C

Monster Roll: 4

Weapon Length: 0 (Tooth/Claw)

Comments: Like the dragons, trolls can frequently be found with their big cousins. They are as fast as the Tremendous troll, but don't get their devastating time 2 attack. Trolls are armoured, so take that into account. The Swordsman will not be able to kill them unless he uses the Oil of Poison. Heavy trolls come in pairs.

Serpent

Vulnerability: Heavy and Armoured

Appears: Dank C, Slither (M or C)

Monster Roll: 2

Weapon Length: 0 (Tooth/Claw)

Comments: Again, serpents of this type appear in pairs, sometimes with their mum. They are just as dangerous as trolls on their alerted side, but unalerted the won't even cause a Wound against armour.

Giant Bat

Vulnerability: Heavy

Appears: Bones M, Ruins M, Howl M, Flutter (M or C)

Monster Roll: 6

Weapon Length: 0 (Tooth/Claw)

Comments: Sharks with wings. Universally reviled as the most annoying monster in the Realm. It is a rare mountain or cave tile that doesn't have one or more of the Sound/Warning chits that summons these nasties. And where there's one, there will always be more. A horde of bats will easily overwhelm any character, causing Wounds and wearing you slowly down. They are too fast to run from and too fast to undercut (in most cases). They will start with a fast move and a faster attack, but when they flip it's a fast attack and a faster move. If they flip, some of the lighter characters will be able to run from them by using a time 2 chit, but most still will not. I have come up with no way of reliably wiping out six bats. The Control Bats spell can be used, but it has to be used very carefully! The spell expires at Sunset - just before combat. Many an unwary Woods Girl has been killed by a previously-controlled flock of bats. Easier just to send them away to a Woods or Valley tile where they won't bother you.

However, consider the lone bat as a target for Absorb Essence. They are fast, allowing you to escape combat, and they Fly, which makes it a lot easier to get about the map. A Witch or Witch King with a Bat absorbed should be able to zip about the map easily, finding appropriate treasure sites. Just be careful of the High Pass and Ledges. Because you land in a random clearing, it is best to land nearby and walk to the clearing you want. And make certain you don't run out of Black magic chits!

Spider

Vulnerability: Heavy

Appears: Dank M, Stink M, Patter M

Monster Roll: 5

Weapon Length: 0 (Tooth/Claw)

Fame: 3

Notoriety: 3

Comments: Watch out for the Spider's nasty bite! Most of the time the spiders just mill around avoiding your attacks, but once in a while they sink their fangs in and really do the damage. They're fast, but the T attack is slow enough to avoid most of the time.
