Medium Monsters

by AG last modified 22-07-2006 20:04

Don't underestimate these beasties. The T and H monsters may be more dangerous individually, but most M monsters appear in groups. The Wolves in particular are good at surrounding characters and wounding them to death - they are almost as good at it as goblins.

Imp

Vulnerability: Medium

Appears: Statue

Monster Roll: 5

Weapon Length: 17 (Spell) or 0 (Tooth/Claw)

Fame: 2

Notoriety: 1

Comments: The Imp is the only non-Tremendous monster that guards a treasure site. It will open up with a Curse, which is not going to kill you but can still ruin your day. This little bugger is incredibly fast - fast enough to avoid being undercut most of the time, and you usually can't run away from it.

The Statue has 2 Type VII spells and one Type VIII, so it is of interest to Druid, Elf, Pilgrim, Witch and Magician. The treasures are a little lean though - only 2 small and 1 large treasure, which means that you probably won't get anything at all.

Viper

Vulnerability: Medium and Armoured

Appears: Dank W

Monster Roll: 2

Weapon Length: 0 (Tooth/Claw)

Fame: 1

Notoriety: 2

Comments: It will stick you with its fangs on one side - albeit fairly slowly, and on the other it will prevent you from running. These things can be tenacious, and they always come in pairs.

Goblin with Axe

Vulnerability: Medium

Appears: Ruins C, Patter C, Howl C

Monster Roll: 3

Weapon Length: 2 (Axe)

Unalerted MoveUnalerted FightAlerted MoveAlerted Fight
3L4*4M4*

Fame: 1

Notoriety: 1

Comments: Your basic horde of goblins is not hard to deal with. The Berserker and White Knight may be able to take them out on their own - most other characters will need help. Fiery Blast is certainly a good way to open negotiations.

Goblins can sometimes be Hired by using the Deal With Goblins spell, but don't count on it. There is something appealing about leading a horde of goblins on a march of conquest across the Realm.

Beware - for where the axe goblins appear, the spear and sword goblins are sure to follow!

Goblin with Spear

Vulnerability: Medium

Appears: Ruins C, Patter C, Howl C

Monster Roll: 3

Weapon Length: 10 (Spear)

Comments: These fellows also are not too hard to take out. They can only attack when they Change Tactics, and it is usually possible to target the dangerous ones.

Goblin with Great Sword

Vulnerability: Medium

Appears: Ruins C, Patter C, Howl C

Monster Roll: 3

Weapon Length: 8 (Great Sword)

Comments: These are the nasty goblins. As fast as their brethren, but they pack a wallop when they hit. They will be able to overwhelm and damage anything that they get their nasty little claws on.

Ghost

Vulnerability: Medium

Appears: Bones V

Monster Roll: Always. And they regenerate every week.

Weapon Length: 0 (Tooth/Claw)

Notoriety: 1

Comments: The two ghosts are possibly the second most annoying monster in the game - although they're not actually that hard to kill. They have a quite solid attack on their unalerted side, and if they flip, they can be incredibly tenacious. Stones Fly works well.

Ogre

Vulnerability: Medium

Appears: Bones W

Monster Roll: 3

Weapon Length: 0 (Tooth/Claw)

Unalerted MoveUnalerted FightAlerted MoveAlerted Fight
5T54H5

Fame: 0

Notoriety: 2

Comments: Ogres appear in pairs, but they are not usually a problem except for non-combatant characters. Most combat-based characters will be able to real with them quite easily. Just watch out for that T attack. Missile weapons work quite well, as do attack spells such as Fiery Blast. Ogres can also be Hired through use of the Persuade spell. In such a capacity they behave as hired leaders, giving you some muscle to loot fatiguing treasure sites, open the Vault, etc.

Wolf

Vulnerability: Medium

Appears: Ruins W

Monster Roll: 3

Weapon Length: 0 (Tooth/Claw)

Unalerted MoveUnalerted FightAlerted MoveAlerted Fight
3L4 or M54M4 or L3

Fame: 0

Notoriety: 1

Comments: Wolves hunt in packs - everyone knows this. They don't inflict much damage, but it is enough to cause a wound on their M side, and they are pretty fast. Armoured characters should be able to survive long enough, but fast attacks or ambushing with missile weapons will do even better.
