Tremendous Monsters
The Tremendous monsters are usually found guarding the treasure sites, so anyone who wants to Loot will generally find them. They are pretty much unavoidable. Unless you are the Dwarf, Berserker or White Knight (or the Woods Girl with the Belt of Strength and the Bane Sword) then you will not usually be able to kill them. All three of the Heavy fighters can generally attack at Time 4 - the Dwarf and the Berserker with an alerted Great Axe, and the White Knight with his Fight T4** chit - but rarely get faster than this. The Bane sword is the ultimate weapon against tremendous monsters. Not only does it inflict T damage before sharpness (thus being able to kill the armoured monsters) but when alerted it also has a time of 2, which is fast enough to undercut anything except the Winged Demon.
Tremendous Flying Dragon
Vulnerability: Tremendous and armoured
Appears: Horde
Monster Roll: 1
Body Weapon Length: 0 (tooth/claw)
| Unalerted Move | Unalerted Fight | Alerted Move | Alerted Fight |
| 4 | M3 | 4 | 6! |
Head Weapon Length: 7 (Broadsword)
| Unalerted Move | Unalerted Fight | Alerted Move | Alerted Fight |
| M3 | T3 |
Fame: 12
Notoriety: 12
Comments: This is one of the most dangerous monsters in the whole game. It cannot be hurt except by the toughest fighters using the heaviest weapons. Only the Bane Sword or an alerted Morning Star has a chance of undercutting it. Being armoured, missile weapons and spells cannot be relied on to kill this monster. If you want to loot the largest treasure site in the game, you will have to find some way of dealing with this dragon. The head is longer than a Great Axe or Morning Star, and will certainly get in a hit before you, so be prepared to take at least a wound.
Once it gets a hit and flips to its red side, you have a considerable grace period before you are automatically killed. It will hit at Time 6, which can be beaten by any heavy character with an alerted weapon, if you manage to match directions. The head will still be quicker though.
With nine treasures (4 small and 5 large), the rewards are going to be great for anyone who can avoid or deal with this dragon.
This is a preferred target for the Absorb Essence spell. A cautious Witch or Witch King who keeps plenty of Black magic on hand should be able to achieve lots of Fame and Notoriety with this monster absorbed.
Tremendous Dragon
Vulnerability: Tremendous and armoured
Appears: Lair, Smoke C, Roar C, Slither (M or C)
Monster Roll: 1
Body Weapon Length: 0 (tooth/claw)
| Unalerted Move | Unalerted Fight | Alerted Move | Alerted Fight |
| 6 | H5 | 6 | 3! |
Head Weapon Length: 9 (Staff)
| Unalerted Move | Unalerted Fight | Alerted Move | Alerted Fight |
| H4 | T4 |
Fame: 10
Notoriety: 10
Comments: This dragon is considerably less dangerous to the heavy fighters than its cousin the T Flying Dragon. It is much slower, and can be easily undercut by (for example) an alerted Great Axe. Beware, however, of the head. The head is longer than almost all other weapons, and is certainly longer than a Great Sword or a Great Axe. The spear is the only weapon which will strike before the dragon's head in the first round, and it is insufficient to cause damage. The head also attacks at Time 4 on either side, which is fast.
The Lair isn't quite as lucrative as the Horde. It has 4 small and 3 large treasures, which is still no small haul.
Beware of its red side. Once it grabs you, it will be automatically killing you at time 3, which is before an alerted Great Axe, and faster than the White Knight can swing his sword.
Octopus
Vulnerability: Tremendous
Appears: Pool
Monster Roll: 3
Weapon Length: 0 (tooth/claw)
| Unalerted Move | Unalerted Fight | Alerted Move | Alerted Fight |
| 2 | L4 | 3 | 4! |
Fame: 8
Notoriety: 8
Comments: This is another very nasty opponent. Not armoured, thankfully, but incredibly fast. Only the Bane Sword can undercut it, and only after it has flipped to its red side. On its unalerted side it can inflict only Light damage, but it will still flip if it hits. If you have the Bane Sword, the best tactic is to alert your weapon, let it hit you on the first round, then strike on the second. You will undercut it with Time 2, and it will not have a chance of destroying you. Other weapons you just have to hope you line up. Help works. Hire the Guard and let them swing in all directions with their T attacks and you'll be sure of getting it.
The Pool is almost as good as the Horde in terms of treasures. Remember that you will have to fatigue on each successful Loot roll, so plan your Rests accordingly. It contains 6 small and 3 large treasures.
Alternatively, the Druid, Witch and Magician can cast the Guide Spider or Octopus spell and send it away. If you like living dangerously, get the Octopus to Loot its own pool and give you the treasures. With sufficient chits you can keep this going for several turns, long enough to get most of the treasures in the site.
Consider this monster as a target for Absorb Essence. Not only does it effectively get rid of the thing, but the Octopus can scythe through smaller monsters like Axe Goblins effortlessly.
Tremendous Troll
Vulnerability: Tremendous and Armoured
Appears: Vault, Bones C, Stink C, Roar C
Monster Roll: 4
Weapon Length: 0 (tooth/claw)
| Unalerted Move | Unalerted Fight | Alerted Move | Alerted Fight |
| 4 | H4 | 6 | 2! |
Fame: 8
Notoriety: 8
Comments: This is another very nasty monster. Let's face it; all the T monsters are pretty nasty. But you really don't want to let this one pick you up. It will kill you at time 2. Unless you have a faster weapon, like the Bane Sword, you will die. Best to undercut it with the Morning Star before it gets a chance.
The Vault will require T strength to open. A T move or fight chit, a follower who can inflict T damage, or a boots or gloves card will do the trick. Or the Lost Keys. If you don't have any of these, then the Vault is just a hole in the ground. Once you get it open, it contains 5 large treasures, which is nothing to sneeze at.
This is a good choice for Absorb Essence. Tough and fast, it is able to take on smaller monsters and natives with little danger. Beware because most of the monsters do not have sharpness stars, and are therefore not affected by armour.
Winged Demon
Vulnerability: Tremendous
Appears: Shrine
Monster Roll: 2
Weapon Length: 17 (Spell) or 0 (Tooth/Claw)
| Unalerted Move | Unalerted Fight | Alerted Move | Alerted Fight |
| 3 | V3 | 2 | 5! |
Fame: 8
Notoriety: 8
Comments: The Demons will open up with a Power of the Pit attack, which is usually quite bad for anyone who is ambushed by one. The Pilgrim will not be attacked. Even after the opening attack, when the thing flips to its red side, it has a move time of 2 which is fast enough to avoid being undercut by even the Bane Sword. An exceptionally dangerous creature. Its only real vulnerability is the Exorcise spell, although Pentangle will prevent it from attacking you. It guards the Shrine, which has Type I and Type V spells, so both the Pilgrim and the Witch-King are going to be found there. Other characters should avoid the Shrine if possible.
The Shrine has 4 Treasures - 2 large and 2 small - and one each of Type I and Type V spells. There is no character who can learn both types of spells. The four treasures are a bit of a problem - it can generally be relied on to get one or two of them at most.
Witches and Witch Kings should consider carefully whether they want to Absorb a Winged Demon. There is a very small chance that the Power of the Pit attack will come up 1,1 - indicating that everyone and everything in the clearing is instantly killed (including the Demon/character). Additionally, the Power of the Pit is much less effective against monsters and natives than it is against characters.
Demon
Vulnerability: Tremendous
Appears: Altar
Monster Roll: 2
Weapon Length: 17 (Spell) or 0 (Tooth/Claw)
| Unalerted Move | Unalerted Fight | Alerted Move | Alerted Fight |
| 4 | V2 | 4 | 4! |
Fame: 8
Notoriety: 8
Comments: The non-winged variety of Demon is not quite as dangerous as the winged variety since it is slower, but it is still plenty dangerous enough for most people. Again, there is a Power of the Pit attack for openers, but fast weapons will get a chance to take it out once this takes effect.
The Altar contains 4 large treasures, so it's well worth a couple of turns Looting. It also contains a Type II and a Type III spell. The Wizard and Elf are clearly most interested in this.
Similar caveats as for the Winged Demon as regards Absorb Essence, but the non-Winged Demon is considerably slower than the Winged variety, and much more likely to be caught in combat.
Giant
Vulnerability: Tremendous
Appears: Bones M, Stink M, Roar M
Monster Roll: 4
Body Weapon Length: 0 (tooth/claw)
| Unalerted Move | Unalerted Fight | Alerted Move | Alerted Fight |
| 5 | H5 | 6 | 4! |
Club Weapon Length: 8 (Great Sword)
| Unalerted Move | Unalerted Fight | Alerted Move | Alerted Fight |
| H6 | T4 |
Fame: 8
Notoriety: 8
Comments: Comments: Giants can be annoying, but they are not hard to kill - so long as you can do T damage. The main danger is the club, which is longer than most weapons. The Giant is slow and cumbersome in most cases, so it shouldn't be difficult to undercut.
Tremendous Serpent
Vulnerability: Tremendous and Armoured
Appears: Dank C, Slither (M or C)
Monster Roll: 2
Weapon Length: 0 (Tooth/Claw)
| Unalerted Move | Unalerted Fight | Alerted Move | Alerted Fight |
| 3 | M4 | 5 | 4! |
Fame: 7
Notoriety: 7
Comments: Deceptively weak at first, this big snake is hard to undercut, and attacks quickly. Your only real saving grace here is that once it picks you up, you can undercut it with a time 4 attack.
Tremendous Spider
Vulnerability: Tremendous
Appears: Cairns
Monster Roll: 5
Weapon Length: 0 (Tooth/Claw)
| Unalerted Move | Unalerted Fight | Alerted Move | Alerted Fight |
| 3 | M4 | 4 | 5! |
Fame: 6
Notoriety: 6
Comments: As far as the Tremendous monsters go, this is possibly one of the weakest. It is fast, and hard to undercut on either side, so don't underestimate it.
The Cairns is a good source of treasure, but you will have to fatigue a chit every time you roll. It contains mainly small treasures (6 small and 1 large), so it would be fairly rare to pick up the large treasure from here.
