Type VIII
Available to: Druid, Witch, Magician
Sources: Black Book, Beast Pipes, Statue, Crone
Bad Luck (Type VIII/Any)
Target: One character
Duration: Permanent
Usefulness: 4
The target character adds one to his result whenever he uses any table (except where specified in the rules or table descriptions).
Another of those inconveniencing spells that just doesn't seem to be worth risking the target's wrath. However, if you're really bent on annoying some other player, this Permanent spell is energised by any colour of magic, so it's likely to be quite inconvenient. It also ties up one of your valuable Type VIII chits. Just watch out when they come after you to try and break the spell by killing the spellcaster.
Deal With Goblins (Type VIII/Black)
Target: All of the Goblins in the spellcaster's clearing
Duration: Day
Usefulness: 3
The spellcaster pacifies the Goblins. To hire them, he uses the Neutral column of the Meeting Table. Special: When this spell is cast by an Artifact or Spell Book, the Goblins are pacified by the character who holds the item. When no character holds the item, the spell is nullified.
I'd love to see this spell cast. The idea of leading a horde of Goblins into battle just appeals to me somehow.
Guide Spider or Octopus (Type VIII/Grey)
Duration: Day
Usefulness: 3
The spellcaster controls the monster. Special: When this spell is cast by an Artifact or Spell Book, the monster is controlled by the character who holds the item. When no character holds the item, the spell is nullified.
Useful for getting rid of that nasty Octopus. You can use it to attack another character or native group, Loot its Pool so that you don't have to fatigue, or you can just send it to a nearby Woods or Valley tile to squelch around where it won't bother you.
Note that when it becomes uncontrolled, at Sunset of every day, it loses all of the locations it has Located and abandons any treasure it has Looted. If you're going to use the Octopus to Loot its own Pool, you must remember to share the location of the Pool with this Octopus at the beginning of your turn. When it drops its treasure, you will be able to loot it from the clearing, which doesn't carry the Fatigue. The same would be true of the T Spider and the Cairns.
Poison (Type VIII/Grey)
Target: One weapon counter, native counter, Goblins counter, Ogre counter or Giant's club
Duration: Day
Usefulness: 4
Add one sharpness star to the harm the target counter inflicts when it hits. This spell cannot be cast on the Alchemist's Mixture.
This seems to be a pretty useful spell, but I've never felt that it was worth taking at the beginning of the game. Each of the characters who can start with this spell has no weapons, so they can only cast it on their Dagger, making it neg** or Medium damage against unarmoured. However, if they team up with a weapon-using character, they can cast it on that character's weapon. That might make it more useful.
Remedy (Type VIII/Grey)
Target: One spell or curse in the spellcaster's clearing
Duration: Instant
Usefulness:
The target spell or curse must already exist when it is specified as a target - it cannot be a spell that is being cast during the current round. The target can be one Curse on one character, or one spell. The target spell or curse is broken. Duplicates of the spell are not affected.
The most useful spell in the entire Grey arsenal. A must-have for any character who picks Spells as Victory Conditions.
Whistle for Monsters (Type VIII/Purple)
Target: One face-up Sound chit anywhere on the map
Duration: Instant
Usefulness: 3
This spell cannot be cast in a tile that contains less than six clearings, and it cannot be cast on a chit that is facedown. If the target chit is not in the spellcaster's tile, then it is moved to his tile. If it is already in his tile, then he can move it to any other tile that contains six clearings. Thereafter, the Sound chit summons monsters to its new tile.
This spell could be used for clearing danger zones of their monsters. Summon all of the sound chits to one tile and you only have to deal with the T monsters at the sites. If you think you can handle them, that is.
