Impressions of Noumalia a few games in
Up to Characters
Noumalia is young and impulsive. Frastrated at noble life and its limitations placed on her she has sought adventure out in the wide galaxy.
Despite her high position and experiences provided by her family on her world she is quite inexperienced about the ways of the universe. A fact she refuses to admit to anyone else and hopes secretly to rectify.
However her little adventure has turned out to be far bigger than she could have imagined.
She has a position as engineer on a ship called the Mystic Shark. A job she enjoys immensly as it takes her far away from the boring politics of her home world. That being said, she is still adjusting to the idea of taking orders. Something she has never been good at as she was usually the duchess and everyone else, the peasants. Even her parents let her order them about (proud of their daughter in every way).
The crew are interesting…
The Captain: To a degree Noumalia admires Relena’s forcefullness. She has risen above her situation and demands respect from all she has dealings with. And usually gets it – in some way or another. Noumalia is fasciniated by the concept of a world where a peasant can rise above her natural position in society and yet this concept is completely alien to her. But there is a lot about the captain that frustrates her to the point of yowling. The possessive need to be involved in the running of every aspect of the ship and its crew. An ability to ignore danger which usually resulted in being knocked out. This was becoming a common occurance! (Noumalia is still annoyed about the events following the hockey match and feels that the captain owes her). An apparent habit of not thinking things through before taking action, as well as a refusal to listen to knew ideas that may contradict her own. Though im sure Noumalia herself is guilty of this (Maybe that’s why she hates seeing the captain do it so much!)
The Sniper: Noumalia and Kelda are the complete opposite in every way. Noumalia doesn’t like her at all. Her every instinct as a member of the noble class screams fear and uncertainty whenever Kelda enters the room. That being said, she almost enjoys the not-so-friendly banter and is glad that Kelda is (in a way) on her side. She, however, plans to use the assassin as a practice field as her psionic abilities progress and will always be watching her back for retaliatory strikes.
The Medic: Unity doesn’t register much in Noumalia’s radar at the moment. She appreciates his quiet nature when everyone else on the ship is screaming insults at the top of their lungs (or minds as is usually the case). She sees an Anthropos with a calm exterior but a raging storm hidden well inside. I can see the med lab becoming an area of interest for Noumalia in the future as she strives to understand more of the galaxy and the people she is travelling with. And I there is potential for dialogue between Unity and Noumalia, if only to explan to her why Anthropos are so frustratingly strange!
Lance: Can be as scary as Kelda when his blood is up. When that is the case Noumalia is usually hiding in the rafters somewhere or busy doing something on the opposite section of the ship. That being said, she feels more comfortable around him than the rest of the crew for the bond the two of them have with the ship. Lance is particularly possessive of the ship and though im sure he doesn’t have much interest in Noumalia, and would enjoy watching kelda throw her out the nearest air lock, She nonetheless feels she understands him more than any of the others. Feeling no particular bond to her duchy, she has accepted the mystic shark as her home and feels she is starting to understand the mechanics of the ship which of course to her could translate as understanding its soul. I can deffinitely see Noumalia hanging out in the cocpit late at night when the captain and others are asleep. Annoying Lance with long boring stories of life back on her home planet, or else asking endless questions about the universe. These two were on the ship before the rest of the crew, and are usually left with the ship when the rest of the crew go out on a mission. Though this may change as Noumalia’s confidence and psionic abilities improve.
What she is feeling overall:
I think Noumalia is starting to feel lonely. Back at home she had adoring servants who were always around (something she found at the time to be majorly annoying) but now she is isolated on a ship full of people who do not get along very well. Everyone has their own secrets, and keep largely to themselves.
But Noumalia is starting to realise that to survive she is going to need more than a wonderful adventure. She has never had a friend, and isnt quite sure how to go about getting one. Back at home people were usually coming up to her for attention and now she is the one who has to work to get people’s interest. And deep down I think she is starting to see the value of having a friend over an adoring servant who always does as they are told. But she resents having to work for social interaction with people of a lesser class. They should all like her already! I mean she is a perfect, talented and beautiful Zin-Shee woman isn’t she?
So I can see Noumalia becoming a little isolated and vulnerable. Annoying, snobbish and completely intollerable of course! But I really see her beginning to struggle internally as the campaign developes. She is still very young (A fact I need to remember during game) and the desire to prove herself to the crew will become evident. But at the same time she will not want to appear weak.
Kelda’s recent conspiracy with the captain is troubling. In the past outside politics was of no interest to her, but now she is living out in the galaxy and is finding that it would be prudent to keep her eyes and ears open to all around her. Knowledge is power no matter how short her attention span is!
She would like to stay as far out of the conspiracy as possibly, though is probably going to use her contacts to help her captain in any way she can (otherwise her ship might get hurt! And Noumalia would be out of a job!)

Here are a few additional questions to get you thinking more about your character. Feel free to answer or ignore as many of them as you like.
Briefly describe a defining moment in your childhood and how it influenced your life.
How did you get along with your parents?
Do you have a notorious or celebrated ancestor?
If so, what did this person do to become famous or infamous?
What is the one task you would absolutely refuse to do?
What do you read? Scientific textbooks, historical novels, myths and legends, maps, cookbooks, romances, news magazines, science fiction, fantasy, horror, the newspaper, short stories?
